A police officer in Pennsylvania has been taken into custody after being charged with rape and aggravated indecent assault of a 13-month-old child.
Documents show that Officer Steven Kyle Cugini was apprehended without incident on Tuesday after an investigation was done by the Pennsylvania State Police Lykens Criminal Investigation Unit.
Between April 11 and April 15, the unit responded to reports of extreme bruising of a 13-month-old. This started an investigation into the matter where detectives discovered that the victim had broken bones, bruising, and had suffered from sexual violence.
Authorities stated that the child had been hospitalized, and the injuries were being looked over by the Dauphin County Child Abuse Team and PSP.
Documents show that the victim had a broken tibia and fibula on her left leg and other wounds that were consistent with sexual abuse.
Reports indicate that Cugini first stated that the wounds were due to a diaper rash, a fall, and the family dog. However, after more questioning by authorities, he later confessed that the wounds happened while he had been taking care of the child by himself.
Cugini has now been suspended as the investigation is ongoing.
