Paying For Sex Will Now Be A Felony In Texas

2.6kviews

Texas is modifying prostitution laws.

On September 1, it will make purchasing sex a felony, becoming the first state to do so.

To add, House Bill1540 was approved by Governor Greg Abbott in June. This was done to take the focus off of those who are prostituting to the ones that are paying for sex. The prostitutes are sometimes sex trafficking victims.

Also, some officials believe that this will stop many sex workers from engaging in the illegal activity. Others say that it just causes sex victims to go through more issues dealing with the legal system.

The law states that the first time someone is convicted of prostitution, they could spend a maximum of 2 years in jail. Additional felony punishments are put into place if a person attempts to pickup someone from a treatment facility or a youth center. Also if they sell drugs within 1,000 ft. of the centers.
