Parents Win $1 Million Lawsuit After Their Daughter Is Raped, Tortured, And Murdered
An Ohio family received a $1 million legal settlement following their daughter’s death in 2017.
Alianna DeFreeze, 14, was waiting for her bus to go to school when a man approaches her. Christopher Whittaker, a convicted rapist, lures her to an abandoned house where he then tortures, rapes, and kills her.
Christopher Whittaker is later sentenced to death for these crimes.
Following the tragedy, her family sued the city of Cleveland, E Prep and Village Prep Woodland Hills, Lynesha Richardson, Friends of Breakthrough Schools, and Christopher Whittaker in a wrongful death lawsuit.
The parents, Damon DeFreeze and Donnesha Cooper, claimed the staff at Alianna’s school, E Prep, didn’t inform them when Alianna didn’t show up for school the day of her disappearance. In addition to the school, the parents sued the owners of the abandoned house for improper maintenance and monitoring. The city of Cleveland is also included in the lawsuit.
Alianna’s death helped launch ‘Alianna’s Alert’, which requires all schools to inform parents within two hours of a student’s absence.
