As of Tuesday morning, the death toll has surpassed 5,000 along the Syria and Turkey border where a massive M7.8 earthquake rattled the region before dawn on Monday.

Over 6,000 buildings toppled and crumbled to the ground, trapping thousands of people, when the M7.8 earthquake tore through Turkey and Syria in the middle-east.

Search and rescue teams continue to search for survivors as the death toll continues to skyrocket. Rescuers battled rain and snow on Monday as they lifted rubble, finding children stuck between slabs of concrete waiting to be pulled out to safety.

The earthquake was felt as far away as ECairo and was centered in Turkey’s southeastern province of Kahramanmaras.
