After consuming bootleg alcohol in Istanbul, 22 people have died, and 16 others are in the hospital in serious condition.

The governor’s office issued a statement that said 11 of the individuals that died, and 5 that are sick, are foreign nationals.

Four suspects have been apprehended in connection to the deaths.

It has been reported that the 26 people died over four days from methanol alcohol poisoning, in nine Turkish providences.

Now, officials have begun a country-wide crackdown on bootleg alcohol production. They have raided 300 different places and taken thousands of liters of fake alcohol. Nearly 85 suspects have been detained.

People dying from drinking bootleg alcohol in that area is common because people look for cheaper ways to get the beverages. This is a result of alcohol prices consistently rising.
