On Thursday, the U.S. Coast Guard stated that they intercepted thousands of pounds of cocaine and marijuana.

The drugs that were worth over $1 billion were offloaded at Port Everglades in Florida.

The Coast Guard said that nine different ships took in 54,500 pounds of cocaine 15,800 pounds of marijuana. This happened in the international oceans of the East Pacific and the Caribbean.

“We are hitting the drug traffickers where it hurts them the most,” stated the head of the Office of National Drug Control Policy.

The seizure came after a new strategy was put into place. This plan uses drones that have special infrared cameras that can sense heat coming from smaller ships that are usually transporting cocaine.

The Coast Guard noted that they have made history with this seizure. A record-breaking $206.4 million worth of cocaine and $3.59 million of marijuana were confiscated.

It is unknown if charges were filed in connection to the case.
