I-35W was shut down at NE 28th Street in Fort Worth, Texas, following an incident involving several cars on Thursday morning.
Authorities say that a driver ran out of gas and was waiting for someone to bring him some on the median shoulder.
The driver and a friend were outside the vehicle at close to 9:20 a.m. when another car attempted to avoid striking a semi and swerved into the shoulder, hitting both of them. One of the people was killed, and the other was in critical condition.
Reports indicate that two vehicles were severely damaged.
An investigation is continuing.
