Olympic Committee Responds To Sha’Carri Richardson’s Questioning Of Valieva Decision
Earlier this week, U.S. sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson questioned the Olympics.
She wanted to know why a Russian figure skater was allowed to compete in the Games after a failed drug test. However, Richardson was banned from last summer’s Tokyo Games after she tested positive for cannabis.
15-year-old Kamila Valieva was given the go ahead to continue competing in the Winter Games that is taking place in Beijing, China. This comes after she failed a drug test in December that is just now coming to light.
Now, the International Olympic Committee has given Richardson an explanation.
“You can’t talk about double standards in relation to Russian and American athletes, each case is individual,” said Mark Adams, the spokesperson.
“Richardson’s positive doping test was discovered on June 19, and the results were received before the start of the Olympics. She was suspended for a month. There is nothing in common between these two cases.”
“The Games, which has not concluded, concerns an issue in December…It must be very tough for her.”
The announcement that Richardson was banned came after she was favored to win the women’s 100 meters in Tokyo.
In Valieva’s case, the teen tested positive for the heart drug, trimetazidine, in December. But, the results were only flagged this month, subsequent to Valieva winning the gold in her team’s competition.
The IOC has said that different requirements apply to minors, stating Valieva is a “protected person.”
