Officers Placed On Paid Administrative Leave After Fatal Shooting Of Jayland Walker

Several police officers in Ohio have been put on paid administrative leave. This comes after a police chase resulted in the fatal shooting of Jayland Walker, 25, on Monday.

Around 12:30 a.m., officers from the Akron Police Department tried to stop Walker for a traffic violation. However, Walker wouldn’t pull over, the agency stated.

A pursuit began, and at first, police said that Walker began to shoot at them from his car.

Now, police have made a different statement. They said, “Actions by the suspect caused the officers to perceive he posed a deadly threat to them. In response to the threat, officers discharged their firearms, striking the suspect.”

The department added that officers went after the vehicle for “several minutes.” The individual then slowed down and ran from the vehicle as it was still in motion. A foot pursuit started, and it ended in a parking lot.

Reports indicate that Walker died from dozens of gunshot injuries to his face, abdomen, and upper legs. A total of 90 shots were said to have been fired at him.

A document from the medical examiner’s office noted that Walker was “observed laying on his back and was in handcuffs.” This was seen when the medical examiner arrived to the location.

The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office has stated that Walker’s death has been deemed to be a homicide.

Authorities plan to release body cam footage of the incident and more details on what occurred soon.
