A Dallas organization named “Not My Son” held a ‘HBCU Take Over’ that conducted a community cleanup Saturday in South Dallas.
The event, that took place at the Martin Luther King Recreational Center, involved representatives from various HBCUs. These include graduates from schools like Prairie View A & M University, Tougaloo College, Tennessee State University, and more.
The “Not My Son” organization serves the community in various ways. These entail feeding, clothing, and cleaning the community. They also provide job training, back-to-school supplies, tutoring services, and more.
Additionally, the organization is involved in advocacy work. Executive Director Tramonica Brown stated that they participate in “Know Before You Vote,” and transport individuals to the polls.
“Not My Son” began after the George Floyd killing. Their goal was to alter a negative situation into something that would cause a positive change.
On Saturday, the organization offered stakeholders in the community an opportunity to give back. These HBCU alumni spent time cleaning the South Dallas community, not waiting for outsiders to do the job.
“If every community works within their community, we can build better Black,we can build better communities, we can build better people within the scope,” Brown said.
In April, the organization will be opening a facility on Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. in order to help individuals in the South Dallas area to get the resources that they need.
