NFL Makes Hiring A Minority Offensive Coach Mandatory

1.3kviews

It will now be mandatory for all 32 NFL teams to employ a “female or a member of an ethnic or racial minority.” This is for an offensive coach position for the 2022 season.

In order to pay for the new employees, the teams will be given up to $200,000 in 2022. In 2023, they will be given $205,000.

Additionally, the coaches will receive a one-year contract. However, they must have coached at the professional or collegiate level for at least 3 years.

The league has also stated that women will now be included in the Rooney Rule guidelines. This was created in 2003 and allowed at least two “external minorities” to be interviewed. One would be for a head-coaching job, and the other for a coordinator position.

Before this, women were only required to meet the guidelines for club president and senior executives jobs.

The league says that “this resolution will assist greatly in continuing to source and identify diverse candidates earlier in their career, providing pipeline depth and furthering developing the diverse offensive pipeline.”

With many head coaches already having mostly offensive experience, the league aims to make several changes.
