New Texas Law Takes Effect Sept. 1, Requiring Druken Drivers Who Kill Parents To Pay Child Support
On September 1, a new Texas law will make it mandatory that drivers convicted of killing a parent in a DWI accident will have to support the victim’s children until they turn 18 or graduates from high school.
After reviewing the surviving child’s financial needs and conditions of living prior to the wreck, a judge will decide how much the driver would have to pay out.
If a driver can’t pay because they are imprisoned, they must start making payments within a year of being freed.
In 2022, Tennessee was the first state to implement “Bentley’s Law.” He was a 5-year-old boy who lost his mother and father in a DWI crash.
Now, twenty other states have reviewed or approved laws like this.
“Drive Sober, No Regrets,” is the new Texas Department of Transportation campaign.
During the Labor Day weekend, after the new law will be implemented, local and state agencies will be focusing in on drunk drivers.
