New Orleans Officer Fatally Shot At High School Basketball Game During Dispute Over Wearing A Face Mask

A Tulane police officer was fatally shot at a high school basketball game Friday night.
The incident happened at George Washington Carver High School on the 3000 block of Higgins Boulevard, while Martinus Mitchum,38 was working security for a high school basketball game.
A staff member got into an altercation with a man trying to enter the game without a mask.
Mitchum went to intervene and escort the suspect out, and during the time the suspect pulled out a gun and fired two rounds striking the officer in the chest.
Emergency crews arrived to the scene and transported the officer to a nearby hospital where he died from his injuries.
Officers arrested the suspect, John Shallerhorn,35 at the game.

Tulane Police Chief Kirk Bouyelas issued a statement Saturday morning saying, “we are deeply saddened by the senseless and tragic death of TUPD Corporal Martinus Mitchum. Corporal Mitchum was a dedicated police professional who had a heart of service for the Tulane community. We have reached out to his family and are providing support to his fellow officers during this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and with all the fellow officers with whom he served.”
