On Monday, Gov. Greg Abbott signed a bill into law that eliminates paper license plates. This bill, HB718, will bring a stop to Texas’s controversial temporary paper license tag management operations.

Beginning on July 1, 2025, the new measure with metal tags will take over all paper tags.

The change comes after it was revealed how criminals get their car dealer licenses in order to gain knowledge about the Texas DMV’s online system. Afterwards, they would download and make fake paper tags available for purchase.

It was also noted that many of those tags were then put on vehicles that were a part of major unlawful offenses.

Now, many are hopeful that the new law will bring a stop to this type of organized crime.

Texas DMV has taken many steps to combat the fraudulent purchase of the tags on the black market. However, criminals have still found a way to manipulate the use of fake tags using their access to the agency’s system.
