On February 28, 2023, at around 11 a.m., a murder suspect in Oregon ran away from bailiffs subsequent to them freeing him from shackles in court. Surveillance cameras show him escaping out of the building which led to an ongoing search.

28-year-old Edi Villalobos Jr. had been charged with murder along with other offenses. It was intended that he stand trial; however, he sprinted down a hallway and went out an employees-only exit instead.

It was noted that during the jury selection procedures, all restraints had been taken off of Villalobos. They were put back on during a break and taken back off when the break was over.

On Thursday, video of the incident was released.

After a two-hour search, Villalobos was taken into custody in an apartment after a neighbor contacted authorities to state that somebody had been attempting to break in. When officers entered the apartment, they found him hiding in a closet covered in a blanket.

Villalobos now has two other charges of felony burglary and escaping custody. He is scheduled to be back in court on March 21.
