Andreal Hagler, 38, is a mother from Chicago who killed her daughter after putting a plastic bag over her head. This occurred on the child’s 8th birthday because Hagler felt that her daughter no longer loved her. Instead, she felt that her daughter loved her dad more, authorities say.
The mother has been charged with first-degree murder for the death of Amaria Osby who was yelling, “Mama, stop,” as she was being killed.
On Wednesday, Hagler’s brother had gone to check on the pair. That’s when the child was discovered deceased in her residence, and Hagler was unresponsive.
Hagler tried to stiffen her body and resist as officers picked her up off of a bathroom floor, police say.
When questioned, the mother confessed that she and Amaria had said their prayers the night prior to her death, close to 8 or 9 p.m. Hagler then started doing PCP and smothered Amaria with the bag, the mother added.
Hagler also said that because they both had birthdays on the 24th, she thought it was their time to go. She also confessed to drinking bleach, but her daughter wouldn’t do it.
An autopsy revealed that Amaria died from several injuries from an assault. This includes bleeding under the scalp, bleeding on her brain, and injuries from asphyxiation.
A day before the killing, Children and Family Services had stopped by the apartment. This was in connection to an accusation of domestic violence. However, the agency stated that “no sign of abuse, neglect, or danger was noted by our investigator.”
That matter involved claims of abuse of one parent by the other parent, not involving the child.
Hagler, an occupational therapist, is in custody without bond.
