41-year-old Moira Akers has been found guilty of second-degree murder and first-degree child abuse. This comes four years after she is said to have killed her newborn son.
Akers, from Columbia, Maryland, was transported to a hospital after calling for assistance on November 1, 2018. She didn’t disclose to authorities that she had just delivered a baby, authorities say.
Akers is said to have had the baby inside of her residence. When a welfare check was conducted, detectives looked through the home. They discovered a newborn baby dead inside of a sealed plastic bag beneath a blanket inside of closed closet.
When Akers was questioned about the baby’s body, she told authorities that the child was stillborn.
After an autopsy was done the following day, the baby’s death was determined to be a homicide. The report noted that the baby was born healthy, was full-term, and was breathing. The cause of death was asphyxiation and exposure.
Documents note that Akers looked on the internet to find ways to end a pregnancy.
On July 29, 2022, Akers will be given her sentence.
