A 36-year-old mother was taken into custody after a recording of a child in the trunk of a moving vehicle in Gwinnett County, Georgia, went viral.
On Feb. 25, a woman called authorities after viewing a video she had seen on social media.
In the recording, a child was observed in the trunk of a Dodge passenger car, and the video mentioned Gwinnett County. The vehicle had an out-of-state license plate. However, it isn’t known when or where the video was taken in Gwinnett County. In addition to the child, a large item was seen in the trunk, as well.
With the Flock Safety System, an investigator saw the same car in an unincorporated part of the city of Duluth on Feb. 26. The child could be seen in the trunk in those images.
The investigator was then able to name the registered owner and talked with her at her residence in Duluth. The large item in the trunk was said to be a baby bassinet that she had bought through an online ad.
The child was found to be a 12-year-old boy who was in the trunk. He was keeping the bassinet in place as she was driving.
Diana Denise Shaffer was taken into custody and faces charges of reckless conduct and a seat belt violation, authorities say.
Her son was placed with family temporarily until Shaffer bonded out on Tuesday.
