On Tuesday, a couple in Phoenix, Arizona, was apprehended for abusing the woman’s daughter for close to a year, police say.
Keola Wimbish, 39, and Chloe Sergent, 26, were taken into custody at the Maricopa County Jail. Both of them were charged with physical abuse of a child.
After the girl was removed from the residence in December 2021, medical exams revealed that she had suffered almost 12 broken bones, burn marks, and cuts and bruises that had become infected.
The girl disclosed to authorities that adults set her ablaze, sometimes struck her with a hammer, a machete, and a crowbar. She added that they waterboarded her, meaning they placed her head underwater in a bucket. They then put a cloth over her face and poured water on it.
The girl told police that Wimbish instructed her not to tell police who had harmed her.
The couple told officials that they weren’t aware of who hurt the girl or how bad her injuries were.
Records show that the girl told police that the torture began after Wimbish’s ankle monitor was removed.
