When it comes to girls’ hockey, a Minnesota mother aims to diversify the sport at the youth level. Now, the National Hockey League is praising her.
Meredith Lang strives to observe her daughters and their friends engaging in hockey in a safe space. It started with the Hockey Ninas and turned into partnerships that assisted in forming Minnesota Unbounded.
Because of that, the NHL has nominated Lang for the Willie O’Ree Communities Hero Award. That title is named after the NHL’s first hockey player.
Lang’s daughter, Mia, stated she is more comfortable with hockey since she isn’t the only person of color participating.
Lang, however, doesn’t just want help her daughters.
“Here in Minnesota, we should be trailblazers in this space. So, to be able to get votes and actually bring home an award…is extremely special. It will allow us to have an even bigger platform in this space.”
Three people have been chosen as finalists for the Willie O’Ree Community Hero Award. Mr.O’Ree, the NHL, and fan voting will determine who wins.
All finalists will have an opportunity to give $5,000 to a charity that they choose. The winner will receive $25,000.
