Mississippi State University announced Wednesday that their offensive lineman, Sam Westmoreland, has passed away.
Westmoreland, 18 was born in Tupelo, Mississippi and had just recently graduated from Tupelo High School.
He was a freshman at MSU majoring in industrial technology.
His cause of death has not been released at this time.
In a statement, the university said they are “working cooperatively with the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office, the Oktibbeha County Coroner’s Office, the MSU Division of Student Affairs, and the MSU Athletics Department to determine the facts of this incident.”
MSU Head Football Coach Mike Leach tweeted, “Sam was a beloved son, brother and teammate, and a tremendous young man with a limitless future,” Coach Leach continued. “He will always be remembered and deeply missed by everyone who knew and loved him.”
