After their population has increased, millions of zombie crabs are now migrating in huge groups.
According to residents close to Bay of Pigs, Cuba, the crabs have come early and in numbers that they have never seen before.
The creatures have been able to travel the roadways freely for the past two years as a result of COVID. Thus, their size and population have increased tremendously.
Millions of the crustaceans, which are yellow, red, and black, travel to Cuba’s southern coast into the sea. This started after the island’s spring rain. They arrived in the mornings and nights.
The females go back to the sea in order to release their eggs to be hatched in an area where there is larvae as plankton. This causes mass migrating to happen due to mating.
Zombie crabs get their special name because the organisms host two species of flies. These flies receive their mobility, home, and nutrients from it.
The flies wants to stay in the crustacean. They lay eggs close to the crab’s eyes. The larvae then moves into their host and remains there, surviving off of microbes.
After a while, the larvae will reach the crabs grill chamber and mouthparts prior to dropping off. Over time, they grow to be full grown flies.
Although many crabs have been killed after being run over by cars before COVID, they can still break through tires with their sharp shells.
Zombie crabs are described as omnivorous hunters and usually eat plants as some of their predators include birds.
