On Monday evening, a road rage incident occurred in Rufus, Oregon. Now, the mayor in the city has been accused of attempted murder.

Mayor Dowen Jones, 47, was apprehended for supposedly shooting several rounds, from a firearm, at a nearby car.

Authorities say that two adults and two children, 5 and 8, were driving on Highway 281, following a SUV that had been driving recklessly, at about 8:45 p.m. The SUV then stopped all of a sudden.

The family’s car slowed down a bit in order to get an accurate description of the vehicle to provide to authorities. However, Jones got out of his vehicle and shot at the family’s vehicle, causing damage to it. No injuries were reported.

Jones was later named as the suspected shooter and was apprehended in Rufus by authorities with the Sherman County Sheriff’s Office.

He was placed in the Northern Oregon Regional Corrections in The Dalles and is facing an attempted murder charge and four counts of first-degree attempted assault.

An investigation is continuing.
