Many Fish In Michigan Die Of Herpes

7.8kviews

After an investigation, it has been found that hundreds of common carps on Lake Orion died from koi herpesvirus in July.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources said, “As with most herpesvirus cases, KHV is very specific on which fish species it will infect. It only affects common carp, koi, and goldfish. This is only the third detection of this non-native virus in Michigan waters. It is known to kill large numbers of its host species at times…,” said Gary Whelan, Fisheries Division Research Program manager.

It has been said that around 300 to 600 adult fish died in northeast Oakland County at that time.

The DNR says that viruses that fish get aren’t normally human pathogens because of the difference in body temperatures.

They encourage people to cook freshwater fish thoroughly for safety precautions.
