Man Who Threatened Government Officials Compared Himself To MLK

A Texas man, who journeyed to Washington DC on January 6 and threatened Congress, has been punished.

58 year-old Troy Anthony Smocks, of Dallas, had posted warnings on the right-wing social site, Parler.

He was sentenced to 14 months in prison. Smocks was found guilty of transmitting threats in interstate conmerce which is a felony.

“Let’s hunt these cowards down like the traitors each of them are,” he posted.

It was noted that Smocks says he never actually went to the Capitol. Additionally, he was not charged with any crime in relation to the riot. He was arrested on January 15 when he tried to leave the US and travel to another country.

In court, Smocks argued that because he was Black, his sentence was more harsh than others. He even noted that he shared Dr. Martin Luther King’s “idea of justice.”

The judge, also Black, didn’t buy it. She felt that he hadn’t learned from his past criminal problems and wasn’t remorseful.
