A man has been hospitalized after being shot by Richardson Police Wednesday.
Investigators are saying police were dispatched to an “assist motorist” call on April 7 just after 11 a.m. Once officers arrived on the scene, they found a man that was pointing a gun to his chin. Officers began making several attempts to get the man to surrender the weapon using verbal commands and other non-lethal methods, however the man refused to listen to the officers.
Shortly after other officers arrived on the scene setting up a perimeter around the man stopping both sides of traffic on the 500 block of N. Central Expressway. The man began walking northbound along the freeway into the traffic lines with officers trailing him at a safe distance while still making efforts to speak with him. However, the man still refused to listen to the commands of the officers.
The man made it to the 1400 block of N. Central Expressway, still not listening to officers and still being armed with the weapon. Officers began using a less lethal method and started to deploy bean bag rounds. However, this method did not stop the man and he continued to keep walking. The man reached the 1500 Block of N. Central Expressway and walked east from the expressway crossing over N. Greenville Ave still armed with the handgun.
Officers continued following the man still attempting to make commands for him to drop his weapon. The man continued to ignore the officers. The man then walked onto a parking lot of a local business and into an outside area designated for employees. As officers continued making commands for him to stop and drop his weapon, the man then pointed the gun at the officers. One of the officers fired at the man hitting him in his shoulder.
Officers called for paramedics and the man was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. This situation is still being investigated. The man has not been identified at this time.
