Lonnie Coffman, 72, was sentenced by a federal judge to 46 months in prison. He was charged with bringing a stockpile of guns, mason jars filled with gasoline and styrofoam, a crossbow with bolts, machetes, and ammunition feeding devices to Capitol Hill on January 6, 2021.
Coffman was not charged for being part of the riot but admitted to having these weapons in his pickup truck.
While District Judge Colleen Koller-Kotelly delivered her sentence, she strongly chastised Coffman for his absence of supplying reasoning for his actions and his decision to drive a stockpile of weapons to the Capitol hours before the riot.
Koller-Kotelly made the comparison of the chemicals inside the Molotov cocktails to napalm and said she had never seen such a large or wide assortment of weapons in a federal criminal case.
Like other Jan. 6 defendants, Coffman’s case is extremely different. He was accused of making a trip to Capitol Hill, in December 2020, seeking out a U.S. senator to discuss a challenge to the 2020 election.
He pled guilty to possession of an unregistered firearm. Koller-Kotelly sentenced Coffman to 46 months in prison on Friday. Considering Coffman has been in jail since his arrest on Jan. 6, he will receive credit for time served.
Coffman is a Vietnam War veteran who battles mental and physical challenges during his detainment since Jan. 6. Seeing as how he also had contact with the militia, the FBI has kept Coffman on their radar since 2014.
He will be relocated to a federal prison to serve the remainder of his sentence.
