Man Sentenced To 12 Years In Prison In Phone Unlocking Plot

3.2kviews

Muhammad Fahd, a 35 year-old from Pakistan, has been given 12 years in prison for a plot to “unlock phones.”

The conspiracy cost AT&T more than $200 million.

Fahd started by bribing a worker and his co-workers from an AT&T call center in Washington. They used their validations to gain access to the phones.

This resulted in phones being cut from AT&T’s network. Customers were then able to buy phones for less even if their contracts weren’t up or hadn’t paid off their balances.

The company gained knowledge about the occurrence and got rid of two workers. Fahd still had workers place malware on the company’s network, letting him get into locked phones from Pakistan.

He sold the illegal phone unlocking equipment and is said to have made roughly $5.3 million in the end. 1.9 million phones were unlocked.

Fahd was extradicted to the U.S. He plead guilty to wire fraud and has a $200 million fine.
