A 75-year-old man died after falling into Hawaii’s Kilauea Volcano. The man fell from a closed area in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park on Sunday night, authorities say.
Around 12:15 a.m., on Monday morning, officials say that the man’s family reported him “missing from within the park.”
The rangers in the park and firefighters discovered the man’s body close to 100 feet under the crater rim, to the side of a viewing area.
At 8 a.m. that day, with a helicopter’s help, rangers recovered the man’s body.
His identity hasn’t been revealed, and no further information was provided as an investigation goes on.
According to a 2018 report, Kilauea was named the most dangerous volcano in the country. Many people have fallen over the barriers, in the past, in order to get a better view of the glowing lava lake at night.
