Man Given Two Consecutive Life Sentences For Killing The Mother Of His Fiancée’s Former Boyfriend
27-year-old Jack Doherty, of New York, plotted with a woman to murder someone in Rhode Island in 2020. The woman helped him locate her ex-boyfriend’s residence, and the plan was to kill whoever opened the door.
In November, Doherty was found guilty of murder, discharging a firearm during a violent crime, murder conspiracy, and carrying a pistol without a permit.
Shaylyn Moran, the other offender, was given life in prison plus 20 years for the killing of Cheryl Smith. Smith was the mother of Moran’s former boyfriend.
Before Doherty went on his first visit to Rhode Island to visit Moran on Dec. 19, 2019, the two had been having a long-distance relationship.
After talking on the phone for some time, the pair decided to target Moran’s former boyfriend, Leonard Troufield III. It was reported that Moran and Troufield had an unstable relationship when they had been a couple. It isn’t clear why Moran wanted to hurt her ex-boyfriend though.
Following the celebration of the New Year, Doherty went to Troufield’s residence. After watching the home for a while, he knocked on the door. When Smith, Troufield’s mother, came to the door, Doherty fired a 9mm pistol, untraceable “ghost gun,” four times.
Doherty left the scene, and Smith was transported to a medical facility where she later died.
A little while after the shooting, Doherty sent Moran a message, stating, “now this is for life.” Moran replied, “I’m yours forever and you mine.”
Later, the two killers were located at a hotel and were apprehended.
Now, Doherty has been sentenced to two consecutive life sentences. He was given a five-year sentence for conspiracy to commit murder, and 10 years suspended with 10 years probation for possession of a pistol without a license.
