25-year-old Bazn Berhe, of Virginia, was given 100 years in prison for killing his co-worker for taking his lunch from their work refrigerator at Target.
Berhe was charged with first-degree murder after striking and stabbing 58-year-old Hernan Leiva to death. This occured in a parking lot of the Target on April 17, 2021. Berhe had been upset that Leiva, a janitor at the store, had stolen his lunch out of the office fridge three days prior to the killing.
On April 15, Berhe bought a hammer and two knives as he left work that day. He disclosed to authorities that on April 16, he began “training for the murder.”
On April 17, he waited in the parking lot for Leiva to get to work, and when he arrived, Berhe stabbed and bludgeoned Leiva, killing him. He then left the location.
Berhe quickly admitted to the killing, and in October 2023, he pled guilty to first-degree murder.
Prosecutors say that at his sentencing hearing, Berhe stated that he would kill or hurt somebody else if he didn’t receive the maximum punishment possible.
