The day after he was served with divorce papers, a man in Grand Rapids, Michigan, shot his wife, authorities say.
The couple had just wed in February.
On Friday, Marcus Durayalle Lofton was arraigned on charges of open murder and felony firearm. He is being held in jail without bond after being accused of fatally shooting Alicia Danielle Lofton.
On August 17, officers answered to call on the intersection of Adams Street SE and Union Avenue because of shots fired. They then discovered Alicia Lofton on the ground next to a residence. She had been suffering from several fatal gunshot injuries to the head and body, police stated.
Detectives named Marcus Lofton as the possible assailant, and an officer discovered him walking in the 1200 block of North Avenue NE.
When Marcus Lofton was questioned, he told authorities that his wife had served him with divorce papers and stated that she was putting the house up for sale. Since he was apprehended in May for supposed domestic violence against her, he was not to have contact with his wife.
However, at close to 8 am on Thursday, he went to Alicia’s home on Union Ave. He stated that the two had a disagreement, and he got her Glock pistol from a drawer and attempted to strike her with it.
Records state that the gun went off, and his wife fled to a bedroom and locked the door. Marcus Lofton said that he burst through the locked door and saw that Alicia was trying to climb out of a window. He then shot her several times prior to leaving the scene in a SUV.
Lofton is set to appear in court again on Sept. 5.
