Christian Smith, a 23 year-old from New Jersey, is suspected of shooting and killing his stepdad. This was after a disagreement occurred following his stepdad’s choice to invite a gay person into the residence.
Smith confronted his stepdad, Dennis McKenzie,43, making homophobic comments about the invitation. Smith’s mother is said to have attempted to stop the argument before it got worse.
When his stepfather barely hit him, Smith took out a gun and shot him three times. McKenzie was hit in the head and died at the scene in front of Smith’s mother and other teenage family members.
A lawyer for Smith stated that the act was unintentional and that Smith even took the gun apart as authorities were on their way.
The gun was bought legally in Pennsylvania.
