Christopher De La Cruz, 28, tried to leap over a subway turnstile at about 6:45 a.m. on Sunday morning in New York.
The man ended up falling and breaking his neck at the Forest Hills-71st Avenue train station in Queens. He was pronounced deceased after hitting his head on the ground, authorities say.
Camera footage of the incident shows Cruz wearing a backpack and trying to jump over the barrier many times but can’t initially because he couldn’t get his feet high enough. When Cruz tried a few minutes later, he fell head-first onto the pavement. His neck was broken instantly.
Authorities say that Cruz was trying to get through the subway station without paying the $2.75 fare.
The city medical examiner will work to find out his exact cause of death.
