A man in Pennsylvania is said to have plowed his vehicle into a fundraising event then attacked his mother at another place.
On Sunday, Adrian Oswaldo Sura Reyes, 24, was arraigned for two open counts of criminal homicide, authorities say.
Around 6:15 p.m., troopers received a call to assist the Berwick Police Department. A man had driven through a crowd of people as a community event was taking place.
The event was being held outside of a bar to help the victims of a house fire, where seven adults and three children lost their lives.
Now, one person died and 17 others were hurt in the new incident, including four critically.
“Today was an absolute tragedy. We will be closed until further notice. Please respect our privacy while we grieve and try to process the events that occurred,” stated the Intoxicology Department bar.
Authorities say that after deliberately driving his car into the crowd, Reyes headed home. He then struck his mother and fatally beat her with a hammer after seeing her in the street. She has been identified as 56-year-old Rosa Reyes. An autopsy determined that her death was a homicide after she was struck by a vehicle.
A motive for the two unrelated occurrences is being reviewed.
The name of the person who died in the fundraiser attack hasn’t been released.
