On Tuesday, David Bennett, 57, died after being the first person to receive a genetically modified pig heart. He was a patient who had terminal heart disease.

It was reported that Bennett died at the same medical facility where he had his transplant. He got the heart on January 7 and was able to live for two months afterward.

No cause of death has been mentioned, but Bennett was getting ill days prior to him dying.

“We are devastated by the loss of Mr. Bennett. He proved to be a brave and noble patient who fought all the way to the end,” said the doctor who performed his transplant.

“We are grateful to Mr. Bennett for his unique and historic role in helping to contribute to a vast array of knowledge to the field of xenotransplantation,” said another doctor.

Xenotransplantation is when organs are exchanged between species.
