25-year-old Mickel Cherry has been charged in connection to the rape and killing of 5-year-old Zoey Felix, in Topeka, Kansas.
Cherry has been charged with capital murder, first-degree murder, and rape.
On Monday night, officers arrived to a gas station and located fire personnel trying to save the girl. She was transported to a medical facility where she later died.
On Tuesday morning, Cherry was apprehended and placed in jail on a $2 million bond. He could face the death penalty.
The Shawnee County District Attorney has noted that the victim and suspect were acquainted with each other but no other relationship was said to be between the two. Some neighbors noted seeing the victim with the suspect prior to this incident.
Authorities in Topeka had been to the child’s home multiple times. Recently, they had gone in September when the power had gone out. Officers had then found the girl in good spirits and health. She had been left in the care of her parent, through a custodial agreement. Officers then left the residence.
Reports indicate that the child had been residing in a tent as her mother lived in the home. Authorities aren’t sure why this was the case.
An investigation is continuing.
