Man Arrested and Facing Multiple Charges After Stabbing Houston Police K-9

A man has been arrested and is facing multiple charges after he stabbed a police K-9 over the weekend.

Officers responded to an attempted robbery carjacking on the 800 block of Memorial Heights Drive.

When officers arrived they learned the suspect, Ryan Mitchell Smith,26 had stolen merchandise from a nearby store and fled before officers could arrive.

Smith was later located in a nearby apartment building parking lot at 1600 Bass Street where he tried to evade arrest.

HPD K9 Nate caught up with Smith on the side of a building where he was stabbed by Smith.

Nate was transported to Vergi 24/7 Emergency & Critical Care Hospital where he underwent surgery. He is expected to survive.

Smith was arrested and charged with evading arrest, interference with a police service animal and robbery bodily injury.
