On Tuesday, September 27, close to 6:08 p.m., the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, in Florida, arrived to a residence after being called about a possible abduction of a 1-year-old.
Authorities then learned that Brandon Leohner, 27, the boyfriend of the child’s mother, had taken the child. He allegedly had a firearm and was driving with the toddler in his lap as he left the home.
Eventually, deputies found the man who was driving erratically and speeding. When officers tried to pull him over, Leohner fled, driving over a median and through on-coming traffic. He then ended up in a parking lot of a Target store.
Then, while carrying the child, Leohner exited the vehicle at a McDonald’s. He used the toddler as a human shield and wouldn’t follow deputies’ orders to put the child down.
After a short standoff, a taser was used on Leohner, and the child was rescued.
The man tried to leave the scene again and still resisted arrest until a K-9 and taser were finally able to get him under control. He was then put in handcuffs and received medical attention from paramedics for injuries suffered by the K-9.
Leohner was apprehended and charged with kidnapping, using a minor as a shield, resisting with violence, child neglect, fleeing and eluding, and reckless driving. After being treated at a medical facility, he was placed in the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility.
