If you are thinking of bringing in the new year with cheers and toast, you may need to get prepared if you live in Texas.
Liquor stores in the state will be closed for 61 straight hours because New Year’s Day will be on a Sunday.
“Alot of states canceled it. They no longer follow the blue law, but Texas does and that’s a good thing. It keeps the families together. They have plenty of time after that to come up here and see us,” said the manager at May’s Liquor Beer & Wine.
The Texas alcohol ban was put into place in 1935 through the Texas Liquor Control Act. Liquor is still prohibited to be sold on Sundays and liquor stores have to stay closed on Sundays. There is also to be no liquor sold on Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year’s Day and before 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. on the remaining days.
Additionally, if one of these holidays falls on a Sunday, Texas liquor stores must remain closed on that following Monday.
As stores close at 9 p.m. on Saturday, the next opportunity to go to the liquor store will be on Tuesday, at 10 a.m.
Be prepared!
