100 Lab monkeys escaped and were scattered across an interstate in Danville, Pennsylvania on Friday.
A truck carrying dozens of crates with live monkeys inside was hit by a dump truck. The accident caused the crates to fall and crash on the road, freeing the monkeys.
The shipment of monkeys were heading to a CDC-approved quarantine facility. The location of the quarantine facility and the type of research for which the monkeys were apparently destined to be a part of was not disclosed. However, drastic measures were taken after all of the escaped monkeys but one were accounted for.
The Pennsylvania Game Commission and other agencies were forced to launch a search for the loose monkey. Valley Township firefighters used thermal imaging to try to locate the animals, and a helicopter also assisted in the search. Officals urged people not to go looking for the monkey and warned them not to approach it if found.
The last escaped monkey was finally accounted for late Saturday evening after a long, strenuous search in freezing temperatures.
All 100 monkeys were accounted for, although, three were dead after being euthanized. It’s unclear why they were euthanazied, however, those euthanized were done so humanely according to the American Veterinary Medical Association guidelines.
This is scary, im wondering if they came in contact with natural wildlife. And, what was they being quarantine for..Oh well…
