Starting on October 21, Keller Independent School District will implement an alternative meal plan for students with unpaid meal charges.

This measure affects students across all grade levels who have lunch balances exceeding $25. In a letter to parents, the district emphasized its commitment to ensuring that all students have access to nutritious meals during school hours, regardless of their financial situation, while also addressing the issue of accumulating negative balances.

For breakfast, students will receive a SunButter and jelly sandwich, while lunch will consist of a turkey and cheese sandwich. Both meals will include fruit and the option of white or chocolate milk, as stated by Keller ISD.

The meals are designed to be nutritionally balanced and comply with the dietary guidelines established by the Texas Department of Agriculture and the National School Lunch and Breakfast Program, according to the district’s announcement.

Additionally, campus cashiers will “proactively but discreetly” inform students when their accounts approach the $25 negative balance limit.

To ensure sensitivity, cafeteria and school staff will be trained to manage these situations discreetly, the district noted.

Once a student’s account reaches a $25 negative balance, parents will be informed that their child will only receive the alternative meal until the balance is cleared.
