The Justice Department announced on Tuesday that it has settled nearly 140 sexual abuse claims against former USA Gymnastics official, Larry Nassar, for $138.7 million.
Nassar’s abuse went on for decades and affected hundreds of girls who were subjected to misconduct while receiving “medical treatment”. However, despite FBI officials being aware of the abuse in 2015, they failed to take the allegations seriously.
The settlement addresses claims against the U.S. for the FBI’s lack of investigation into Nassar’s actions.
Among Nassar’s victims were top gymnasts like Simone Biles, McKayla Maroney, Maggie Nichols, and Aly Raisman. They were some of the few who testified about the FBI’s failures in the investigation.
Nassar confessed to sexually assaulting numerous athletes during his career at Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics from 1996 to 2016.
He pleaded guilty to charges related to child pornography. In 2017, he was sentenced to 60 years in federal prison and up to 175 years in Michigan state prison. In 2018, he admitted to even more criminal sexual conduct charges and was given an additional prison term of up to 125 years.
