Attorneys for Nikolas Cruz, the Parkland school shooter, asked a judge to make a motion.
They wanted to stop certain words from being used when the defendant’s trial begins next month.
Cruz is suspected of killing 17 students at his high school in Florida in 2018.
His lawyers didn’t want words like “the killer”, “the animal”, ” the massacre”, “the schoolhouse slaughter”, or “an execution”, used in court.
Public defender, Melisa McNeil, stated that only words like ” the defendant”, “the incident”, or “the tragedy,” should be allowed. She says that death penalty cases have harsher standards because the verdict and punishment has to be based on the law only.
However, prosecutor Nicole Chiappone disagreed stating that Cruz called himself “the next school shooter” on cellphone recordings before the killings. He also noted,” this is the day of my massacre.”
On Friday, the judge decided that the only words that can’t be used are “the animal”, and ” that thing.”
