On December 7, Jarvis Christian College was given university status with new accreditation and permission to offer masters degrees.
The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools has allowed Jarvis to provide masters degrees in business administration and criminal justice.
The plan took five years for the approval to begin and started with the Jarvis Christian College board of trustees. It then involved the faculty and a special committee.
Now, students won’t have to go elsewhere to receive a masters degree once they have finished their undergraduate studies at the school.
“What offering masters degrees does is it allows us to expand our mission and expand that service in terms of another level. Now, not only are we approved to offer bachelors and associate degrees, but masters degrees, as well. It allows us to further our scope in our service to students,” said the Director of Academic Initiatives at Jarvis.
The two masters programs will start in January 2023. Since it has a new accreditation, Jarvis is now a university.
If the board of trustees grants it, the name of the institution could be changed.
