A Georgia woman who fell out of a police cruiser while in police-custody died Thursday afternoon.

Hancock Sheriff’s County Deputies arrested Brianna Grier from her home on July 15 following a complaint by her mother. Grier’s mother called 911 because her daughter was allegedly having a schizophrenic episode and needed help.

Officers arrested Grier and placed her in the back of a patrol car. While transporting her to the station, Grier was able to somehow fall out of the moving patrol car.

The 28-year-old was significantly injured after the incident and rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. She was placed on a ventilator and was in a coma for a week before doctors deemed her brain-dead. Her ventilator was removed and she was pronounced deceased Thursday around 1 p.m.

Investigators are working to determine exactly how she was able to exit the locked doors of the patrol car.

Grier’s body was sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Crime Lab for an autopsy.
