A police officer in Houston is being praised. This comes after he stopped a possible mass shooting at mall in Texas, and the details are now emerging.

The incident occurred at the Galleria Mall on February 5. However, Sgt. Kendrick Simpo is just now talking about the incident.

“I definitely know what I signed up for 20 years ago…,” the sergeant said.

He was working his second job at the Galleria Mall. Then, he answered to a call regarding a man who was close to Macy’s and had a rifle.

Simpo and a security guard quickly headed that way. Simpo had to keep his weapon in his holster as children were taking part in a dance competition. Although he only wore a small vest, he went ahead anyway.

“I knew if a person did have a rifle, and they were inside the mall, I was pretty much outnumbered. All I had was a handgun at the time..”

Very shortly, Simpo saw the suspect, Guido Herrera, near the ballroom where the children’s competition was located. Camera footage depicted Herrera in a Punisher logo shirt and with a rifle. He also had a Bible in his hands and was sporting a leather mask with spikes.

“I quickly bum rushed him, tackled him…. my first reaction was to make sure I grabbed that rifle,” Simpo stated. “…had in my mind that I was going to get shot….I was like, ‘Whatever I do, I cannot let go of this rifle.’

Simpo was able to turn the gun towards the ceiling as he held Herrera against a wall. Assistance came quickly, and the suspect was apprehended. Not one shot had been fired.

Once he was in custody, police also located 120 rounds of ammunition and a handgun in Herrera’s possession. However, under Texas law, Herrera didn’t commit a felony offense because he didn’t shoot anyone.

Herrera was charged with a misdemeanor. Later, on March 18, he arrived to the Houston FBI headquarters, requesting to speak with the director. In that occurrence, he had a gun in his vehicle. Again, he didn’t point the gun at anyone nor shoot anybody, so he only faced another misdemeanor charge.
