On Monday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed a new bill into law. The new restriction prohibits transgender girls from being a part of female sports in public schools.
Advocates for trans’ rights have called the move discriminatory and hate-filled. They said that the goal is to “energize hard-core conservatives.”
On January 18, the new law will be enforced. Proponents of the bill say that it promotes fairness in schools.
In March 2020, a Republican-led movement began in Idaho, spearheading seven other states to ban similar activities related to transgender people. In Idaho, such prohibitions have been stopped by a federal judge.
Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, Montana, Tennessee, West Virginia, and South Dakota have taken some of the same actions as Idaho.
