A hiker in Alaska was found alive Wednesday. She had been missing after it was said that she was charged by bears more than 24 hours before.
A search was underway for Fina Kiefe, 55, who was by herself on the Pioneer Ridge Trail early Tuesday. She notified her husband and told him she’d been charged by several bears and used bear spray. Teams with dogs searched for her, and the Alaska Air National Guard looked from above, officials said.
Wednesday evening, a volunteer exiting the area observed Kiefer leaving the woods close to the road. This was about an hour after state troopers made the choice to end searches as a result of the weather. During which, officials had intended to evaluate further search attempts Thursday morning.
She has wounds and was taken to a medical facility.
The trail is in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough, northeast of Anchorage.
