Coronado High School has been stripped of its basketball division championship title. This action was taken on Wednesday because some of its players threw tortillas at the other team. Furthermore, that team was from a predominantly Latino school.

After the June 19 division championship game, the California Interscholastic Federation called the act, “degrading and demeaning behavior.”

The predominantly white Coronado High School won the game with a 60-57 victory. Afterwards, at leat two players were seen on camera throwing tortillas at members of the Orange Glen High Scool basketball team.

A tussle then began between coaching staffs from both competitors. Coach JD Laaperi, from Coronado, was fired.

An alumnus, who distributed the tortillas, said it was a tradition at the school he attends, University of California, Santa Barbara. He stated that he was of half-Mexican descent and there was no racial motivation.

The school board made additional recommendations for both schools.
